In order to get an update on the lawsuit filed in the Arizona Supreme Court which challenged the Extracurricular Fee School Tax Credit, the Alumni Association contacted the Scottsdale School District and received the following information from Mr. Randy Blecha (who happens to be a Titan from Arcadia '69!)...
"In 1998, there had been a court case challenging part of the tax credit law. That court decision ended up supporting the law. Therefore, there was no change to the law as a result of the challenge.
Our program went well in terms of collecting extracurricular fees and donations towards those fees. In an attempt to provide schools with more latitude in the areas for which they can collect extracurricular fees, we are proposing a modification (to go into effect July 1, 1999) to the district's fee schedule. In addition to the extracurricular fees that currently exist, we are recommending the addition of a $1.00 extracurricular fee for all programs that do not have a separate fee. This should allow all other clubs, fine arts programs or special groups to charge the $1.00 official fee and then solicit donations to their programs. That would allow tax payers the opportunity of taking up to the $200 tax credit on their private tax returns."
Thanks for the info Randy! Sabercats who want to help can contact Saguaro to find out where to write a check so that it helps out a particular club, fine arts program or extracurricular activity you might want to support. Or keep an eye on the web site and we will post further information after we speak with Saguaro's Administrators.
Not that we would want to deny current Sabercats the fun of bake sales, candy sales, car washes and the like but if you can't make it to your old club's carwash this year... maybe you can send a check to let them know the Alumni are watching!
